"I just got a glimpse into how sports were invented"

Yesterday I worked at the hospital for most of the day redecorating an area that they're going to use as a new waiting room. The hospitals here remind me of the DMV, its terrible. There is a huge room with people watiting on rows of benches for their number to come up on a screen above one of the many counters. This new area we were revamping is supposed to prevent the old waiting room from becoming overcrowded. This morning I went back to the hospital and did medical supplies with Ashley, Holly and Russel. I was asking them a lot of questions about The Book of Mormon and they were actually impressed with my mormon knowledge! Yes! It was such an interesting conversation I was sad when they told us we were done for the day. They brought us to the break room where they gave us some crackers and water. Then one of the nurses handed me a bag with what looked like ground meat in it that smelled like pepperoni. I guess she wanted us to eat it but it was reallyyy gross looking. I ate it and..in Ashley's words "it's like eating a gummy bear." A really meaty tasting gummy bear. After we tried it the other two decided not to. We later found out it was congealed pork skin. As Rachael Ray would say Yum-O. We spent the rest of the day working with the SOLD project (slogan: "sex sells....children") working with children at risk of trafficking teaching them life skills. Today's topic was square foot gardening. We went to scoop manure into bags and I saw the biggest craziest pigs I've ever seen in my life. They looked like the parents from Spirited Away who turn into pigs after eating all the food. Surprisingly a lot of the guys were being weird about getting manure on them so I did a lot of the dirty work. Got juicy poop all over my toes and arms. Again, Yum-O. Working with the kids was great. There is one girl here whose dad was an alcoholic and drowned while he was drunk and whose mom used to be a sex worker and just died recently. She was probably about 11 or 12 and she was awesome. I asked her how to say "rainbow" in Thai because there was a rainbow out and she taught me and when I said it she told me "Gang mach" (very good!). There were some workers resting nearby because we were right next to the rice paddies so I went over to say hello to them. They showed me how to pick rice and offered me some moonshine rice whiskey. One of the workers let me wear his cool planter hat. I think rice fields are some of the most beautiful scenery. You get the reflection of the sky in the water and there were also dragonflies everywhere today. While we were waiting for one of the supervisors to finish talking so he could drive us back I saw a couple of the guys from my group playing baseball with a bamboo stick and rocks so I went over to join them. We counted points based on how many rows of paddies we could hit the rock over. Once we got bored we started making up new games with other junk we found laying around. We were kind of just a spectacle for everyone else and that's when Ashley said the title of this post. I had a really long but fulfilling day. On the way back it started raining when we were sitting in the truckbed. Epic.

  1. When you say you "did medical supplies with Ashley, Holly and Russel", just what do you mean?
[I see you're showing off your new body art in the pics above.]

  3. Ugh, that poor little girl has such a sad life... it's good that she seemed so happy and fun when you were working with her. It's so great that you guys are doing this for those kids!
